Tanzania singer Diamond Platnumz recently marked his first decade in the music industry and to appreciate his supporters, organized a free show in Kigoma which turned out to be a success as it was filled to the brim.
As an appreciation to Allah, the ‘Baba Lao’ crooner went ahead to build a Mosque in his hometown, intending to bring believers together in worship. His offering has however been turned down by the Tanzanian Community and Islamic Institution Secretary, Sheik Issa Ponda who termed the act as illegal.
The Mosque named Al Aziz Mosque was unveiled by the artist on 30 December 2019, eliciting mixed reactions among the Muslim community.
Considering Diamond gets his livelihood through secular music, many have argued that the money used to build the establishment was acquired through ways that contradict their religious beliefs and traditions.
In an interview with Global Publishers, Issa Ponda explained that despite Diamonds pure intentions to please Allah, he will not be blessed through it as what he has done is as though he is mocking his creator.
“Matarajio yake kama ni kupata malipo kwa Mungu, hawezi kuyapata kwa sababu amekwenda kinyume chake… yaani amefanya kejeli.
“Kwa sababu amechuma kwa njia ambayo Mwenyezi Mungu ameikataza, alafu anasema anampa Mwenyezi Mungu, hiyo si sawa, hatapata malipo mazuri… atapata kinyume chake,” said Ponda.
The religious leader went on to stress the importance of using genuine funds to build religious establishments.
“Ndiyo maana tunakemea ule utaratibu wa kuhusisha pato haramu na Mwenyezi Mungu, kwa sababu hicho ni kitu ambacho si mafundisho mazuri kwa jamii,” he went on.

Disappointed
Ponda expressed his disappointment at his fellow Muslim leaders who went ahead to officiate the launch of the Mosque back in December.
“Katika watu wa kulaumiwa ni wale viongozi wa Kiislamu ambao walithubutu kuonesha kuwa jambo lile ni zuri na kuliombea dua… wamekwenda kinyume kabisa na mafundisho ya Kiislamu na maadili ya uongozi.
“Wametoa mchango mbaya wa mafundisho katika jamii. Tunaomba waumini wasiyapokee, ule mtazamo wa viongozi wa dini pia wasiupokee kabisa,” said the religious leader.
Advice for the future
Since the establishment was already launched, Pondo advised leaders to be more careful with who they receive such offerings from. He urged them to do their research and find out how the said individual gets his or her income if they are to build anything for Allah.

“Wakigundua mtu huyo ameleta chumo ambalo si halali, wamsaidie kumbadilisha ili uchumi wake uwe halali. Wanamuziki pia tunawashauri, waangalie kuwa wao ni kioo cha jamii, kwanza waangalie mziki wao unawaelekeza vijana kuwa weledi au lah… waangalie kuanzia mashairi yao, kama ni mabaya au ni mazuri. Na kama hawataki kubadilika basi wabakie hukohuko hadi pale watakapoamua kubadilika,” he concluded.
Diamond is yet to comment on the issue.
